After School Classes
Classes offered after school for our students to learn and experience new things. If you have an idea for teaching a class, please let us know.
Apparel
Sale
(Diane Murk 410-692-0102)
NES apparel sale is held in the Fall and Spring. A variety of school
apparel is offered, sporting our school logo. This is not a fundraiser.
Book Fair
(Valerie Hartman 410-692-6111/Michelle
Blosser)
Our book fairs are not only great for the kids, but they also enable the school library to receive
new books and learning materials. We have 2 Book Fairs, one in the fall and one in the spring.
Volunteers are needed during the day between 9:00am and 3:30pm.
Bull Roast Fundraiser (Diane Murk 410-692-0102)
We will be hosting this event on February 23, 2008 at the Jarrettsville
Volunteer Fire Hall. We will have a DJ, money wheel, and raffle baskets.
Lots of volunteers are needed for this event.
Campbell’s Labels & Big "G" Boxtops (Nancy Pappas)
Classes collect labels and boxtops to earn needed school equipment. This is a great committee for those parents who would prefer to volunteer at home.
Candy Fundraiser (Diane Murk 410-692-0102)
Log Cabin candies will be offered in the Spring, just in time for Easter.
Carnival (Rebecca Rommelman 410-836-1588 & Jen Hollingsworth)
This is a favorite event for all the kids and LOTS of help from parents is needed to make this day a fun time for all. This is a great committee for parents of new students to get involved in.
Cell Phones for Soldiers (Dawn Bayer)
This is a charitable event where we collect expired personal cell phones in
exchange for
calling cards for our soldiers overseas. Cell phones are sent in with the
student and
transferred to the person who is collecting and delivering the phones. One
person is all that is necessary for this commitment. Time
commitment: Approximately 2-3 hours at the end of the school year.
Community Outreach
This committee coordinates the collection of items for those in need in our area, from canned goods at the holidays to mittens and socks for the winter. Our local Boy Scouts generously help on this project.
Computer Ink Cartridge Collection (Dawn Bayer)
When our families have exhausted their computer ink cartridges at home, they are
encouraged to send them in to school with their child and these are collected
throughout the year. They are then exchanged for a profit which goes to
our PTA. This involves collecting the cartridges, filling out the
paperwork, and then mailing them to the company. One person is all that is
necessary for this commitment, and all work is done from home. Time
commitment: Approximately 2 - 3 hours at the end of each school year.
Cultural Arts (Lynda Boegner)
PTA works for enrichment in the education of our students. Cultural Arts
Assemblies are held throughout the year as a means of enriching each
student.
Gardeners Grove (Sandy Cook)
Help is needed year round to maintain the gardening of the CourtYard area. This
committee consists of general maintenance of the courtyard garden, gardens in
front of the school and around the marquee. Weeding, maintenance, cutting
back, etc, can be done at any time (whenever you have free time). Mulching
is done once a year in the spring and this will be organized with hopefully a
group of people to make the job a little easier. Are there any landscapers out there willing to help out in this area?
GIANT
A+ School Rewards (Patty Preston 410-692-2172)
NES will earn school rewards from October - April, when you register your Giant
Bonus Card. You must re-register your bonus card every school year.
Please note there are two separate programs for Giant stores located in MD and
PA. We are eligible for both programs so please be sure to register both
of your bonus cards either on-line or at the Giant Customer Service Desk
starting September 9th. This is an easy fundraising program that does not
require anything but your regular shopping at the grocery store.
Halloween/Fall Celebration (Tricia Allen/Carol Testerman)
This committee needs at least 6 volunteers to help decorate the NES entrance for
the fall season. Volunteers also assemble treat bags for the children’s fall
harvest parties. This includes collecting candy, placing an Oriental
Trading order and gathering one night to fill the treat bags and organize them
by class. A date will be selected to decorate the school and stuff treat
bags once fall party dates have been chosen.
Lunch - Cafeteria & Transport (Cathy Gay)
LOTS of help is needed throughout the entire school year for this activity. This committee helps to ensure that lunchtime runs smoothly by having one parent assist in the cafeteria while the kids are eating and then walking them on good weather days, one class at a time, from the cafeteria to the playground. Help is needed on every school day from 12n to 1p. We are hoping to establish a group of at least 15 parents that can cover this need.
Math-A-Thon (Megan Beck)
This program offers our children the opportunity to raise funds to benefit St. Jude Children’s Hospital by completing a math skills exercise booklet. This volunteer program has been successful
at NES as it gives our children a chance to help other youngsters who have medical problems.
Math
Climber Program:
(Dayna Kilduff)
This program allows students to review basic facts on a weekly basis.
It is a wonderful, individually paced program that motivates students to
master their basic addition, subtraction, multiplication and division facts.
PTA Newsletter (Patty Preston)
This is the PTA’s way of keeping everyone informed of what is happening in and
around the school. You can always access the latest newsletter online at www.norrisville.org.
Committee Chairs are encouraged to submit entries to keep everyone updated.
Newsletter entries must be submitted no later than the third Friday of each
month for the following months’ newsletter. Entries/information can be
sent to Patty Preston.
Nominating Committee
A group of three of more parents who will be responsible for seeking and securing interested members to serve as PTA officers when the term of the present officers is up.
Norrisville Read to Succeed Program (Mary Bannan and Cathy Gay)
Be on the look out for an exciting new PTA program starting this year. It
will be a motivational reading program involving volunteers coming into
classrooms to do book talks with the children. It will also include an
opportunity for children to check out books through the PTA.
Olympic Day (Kim Tulp)
This is a Spring athletic event involving all grade levels. You would:
work with the NES faculty to coordinate activities for the event, communicate to
Room Parents to bring a cooler with ice to keep the drinks cold during the
event, purchase refreshments and popsicles for the students (don’t worry, the
PTA pays for these).
Patriot Program (Mitzi Webster)
This is a voluntary program that provides the children with an opportunity to learn more about the rich heritage of our state and country. A parent volunteer is needed for each classroom to quiz the children weekly on the information they have learned. This takes place over a two to three month period with the program culminating in a Patriot Program recognition and awards assembly.
Publicity (Mary Jane Dykes 410-692-7810)
Lets newspapers, media, etc. know of our upcoming events. Distributes
flyers to area businesses and bulletin boards when applicable. Chairs need
to let Mary Jane know what information to get out to the public.
Reading Month (Rebecca Rommelman 410-836-1588)
This event provides us the opportunity to celebrate reading month. A friendly competition that encourages reading is held among the classes and we top the celebration off with a special Reading Night with guest readers.
Reflections (Carol Kettell 410-557-6048)
(Looking for a new Chair to shadow Carol this year and take over next year)
Reflections is a National PTA arts recognition and achievement program.
Winning entries are able to compete at the county, state and national levels. This committee provides an opportunity for students to use their own creative interest in expressing themselves through literature, photography, music and visual arts. This program takes place from September to mid November.
Science
Fair
(Lynda Boegner and Nancy Pappas)
PTA parent volunteers help with this school run event in the Spring.
Participation awards are given.
School Store
(Tracey Grumbach 410-557-7066)
The School Store is looking for about 5 volunteers to donate 20 minutes one
Friday a month. The school store will be open from about 8:40 until 9:00
every Friday. A volunteer's responsibility would be to supervise the 5th
grade helpers, who do most of the work.
Spaghetti Dinner Fundraiser (Toby Marindin)
This is a real tradition in Norrisville - as we open our doors and invite the
entire community to join us for the best Italian dinner in town! We
have moved this event to the Fall as a GET TO KNOW YOU dinner. We
need LOTS of help in the afternoon to set up, in the evening to serve, and clean
up.
Spirit Week (Laura Walker)
This is a week long celebration of School Spirit. Previous themes have been farmer day, hat day, school colors day and ‘what I want to be when I grow up day’.
Teacher Appreciation (Nicole Giordano)
We will show our appreciation to the teachers who do so much for our children in May. The main event of Teacher Appreciation Week is a luncheon we hold for our teachers.
UnitedScrip Fundraiser
(Patty Preston 410-692-2172 and Rebecca Rommelman 410-836-1588)
UnitedScrip purchases the exact gift cards and certificates that you would
purchase from your favorite grocery store, restaurant, department store,
specialty or general retailer, and they are used the same way. Because
UnitedScrip pays for these cards upfront and because we order large quantities,
the retailers provide the cards at discount. The discount-from
1%-15%– is the revenue for NES PTA. How much do families spend weekly on
gasoline, groceries, clothing, fast food, toys, entertainment, home
improvements, or gifts? Our goal is to turn those dollars into profit for our
school! Using your everyday purchases, UnitedScrip becomes your one stop
shopping center. Last year we made a profit $950.00. We will be offering
this program before the holidays and again in April.
Website (Patty Preston)
What a wonderful school we have, so were letting the world know via the world
wide web! If there is any information that you would like to see posted on our
site, please let us know! We'll do our best to keep it updated and informative.
Yearbook (Susan Birchfield)
This is a BIG PROJECT and will need LOTS of work to ensure success. We are asking that parents from each classroom gather pictures during the school year and send them in.
Although most rooms have a Mom or Dad Photographer, it is still very helpful to
send in your snapshots to the yearbook committee. With your help, the staff will produce a year long, color yearbook that we’ll all be proud of.
And Remember, get your Yearbook orders in on time!
